Illustrated by monks in monasteries, the tradition of Armenian illuminated manuscripts date back to the 5th century. About 30,000 illuminated manuscripts still survive today, the largest collection of which can be found in the Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manscripts or "Matenadaran" in Yerevan, Armenia.
