Considered the most celebrated Armenian musical figure in history, Gomidas/Komitas has gained fame throughout the world. As a priest, composer, choirmaster and musicologist, Կomidas inhabited many roles during his lifetime and was a passionate and rebellious figure, often butting heads with the Armenian Church as he attempted to introduce new musical forms. This friction resulted in his relocation to Constantinople where he achieved a great amount of popularity organizing concerts for international audiences featuring the Armenian folk songs he regularly collected. Before the Armenian Genocide, Կomidas almost succeeded in cracking the code of the ancient Armenian neume system of notation, featured on this t-shirt which honors his legacy. He survived the mass deportations of Armenians that began in 1915, though the traumatic events had a lasting effect on him.

Akhtamar Island is of deep historical and cultural significance to Armenians worldwide. Though the island is now part of Eastern Turkey, it still retains its Armenian name, coined after the cries of a nobleman who drowned while yelling “Akh, Tamar!” as he made his way across Lake Van to visit Armenian Princess Tamar. Today, the 9th century Cathedral of the Holy Cross (featured on the design) is the only structure that remains on Akhtamar Island.
